Building a stronger village starts with listening. Building a stronger village starts with listening.
This focus group with our partners at KPMG reminded us that effective recruitment isn’t one‑size‑fits‑all. It’s local, relational, and rooted in community. IT TAKES A VILLAGE to open doors for more mentors and more meaningful matches throughout East Tennessee.

Thank you KPMG for your valuable input, wisdom, and openness to help us build a stronger village for our community

Meet Talyor and Aaliyah! When this match first b Meet Talyor and Aaliyah!

When this match first began, the goal was simple: to create a space where Aaliyah could feel comfortable, heard, and supported. From the very first meeting, that intention guided everything Taylor did.

Rather than rushing into big plans, Taylor focused on building connection through easy conversation and shared activities. Games, laughter, and relaxed time together helped Aaliyah feel at ease and allowed the relationship to grow naturally. Before long, Aaliyah was sharing what she enjoys and together they plan each outing!

What makes this match work is consistency and care. Taylor shows up thoughtful and prepared, asks questions when needed, and keeps Aaliyah’s needs at the center of every interaction. With clear communication and family support, the relationship continues to grow through simple moments like a park picnic, planning to spend time with Taylor’s dog, and planning creative activities for the future.
This match is a powerful reminder that meaningful change does not require grand gestures. It starts with one caring adult choosing to show up, listen, and build trust, one moment at a time.

Right now, there are more young people like Aaliyah waiting for that kind of support. If you have ever wondered whether you could make a difference as a volunteer, this story shows what is possible. You do not need special skills, just time, consistency, and a willingness to care.
