And though it was difficult for our team, for the families we serve, and for our entire community – it only served to underscore the vital impact of BBBS-ETN programs.

This was a year of firsts – our first-ever Bags for Kids’ Sake (in place of Bowl for Kids’ Sake); our first-ever College and Career Fair + Scholarship Celebration; our first virtual Match events; and the list goes on. And though we couldn’t have anticipated what the year would bring, there’s so much to be proud of. As you review this annual report, keep in mind that it illustrates not only our team’s impact, but your impact on area children.

Thanks to your support we have been able to keep kids connected and to provide families with essential services – food, rent assistance, behavioral health services, and more. We’ve also achieved new milestones, including:

  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of America once again named BBBS-ETN a Quality Award winner. Over the past five years, we’ve been one of the most honored agencies in the country: Quality Award in 2015, Gold Award in 2016, Pinnacle Award in 2017, National Agency of the Year Semifinalist in 2017, Quality Award in 2018 and 2019, National Agency of the Year in 2019, and Quality Award for 2020.
  • Richard Riley, Big Brother and BBBS-ETN board member, received the 2020 Clifford P. Norman Award as the nation’s most outstanding local board member, for his work to launch BBBS-ETN’s Diversity Equity, and Inclusion committee.
  • We also unveiled numerous exciting program enhancements which are detailed in this annual report, including STEM mentoring, Reading to Learn, College and Career Readiness, and more!
  • And we doubled-down on our full-family approach – serving not only Littles, but parents, caregivers, and siblings – through numerous events, activities and trainings. This is possible thanks to numerous funders, including the State of Tennessee and its TANF/2Gen approach.

In addition to celebrating successes, we want to take a moment to welcome our incoming board members: Charley Bible, Dino Cartwright, Jean Fremont, Kenneth Herring, Brandon Hardin, and Crystal Ivey. They join our 2020 class which includes Heidi Carriero, Brooke Lawson, Chris Parrott, and Paige Walton.

And we’d like to welcome our new Board President, Nick Wilson, and provide a heartfelt thanks to BBBS-ETN immediate past Board President Diana Salesky. As you may remember, Diana was named BBBSA’s Irvin F. Westheimer Award for Visionary Leadership in June 2020. If you know Diana, you’re aware that she was extremely deserving of this national recognition – we miss her dearly.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters team looks forward to working alongside you this year, and we appreciate your steadfast support, now more than ever.

Onward!
